Aberdare Ranges Afforestation Project

Aberdare Forest

Restoring One of Kenya’s Most Critical Water Towers

The Aberdare Ranges form one of Kenya’s most important ecosystems — a lifeline supporting millions of people, wildlife habitats, and rivers that feed major dams. However, decades of pressure, illegal logging, charcoal burning, and invasive species have caused severe degradation.

Growth Through Adventure has initiated long-term restoration focusing on degraded blocks, riparian stabilization, and community empowerment.

The Impact of Degradation

Decades of human activity, including logging, overgrazing, and invasive species, have severely degraded these forest areas, threatening biodiversity, water sources, and the livelihoods of local communities.

Field assessments conducted by GTA revealed:

  • Loss of trees from illegal harvesting
  • Deep soil erosion channels
  • Reduced canopy cover leading to drying streams
  • Invasive shrubs suppressing regeneration
  • Overgrazing degrading forest undergrowth
  • Loss of biodiversity

These threats reduce rainfall infiltration, increase runoff, and endanger the hydrological integrity of the water tower.

Degraded Forest

GTA Restoration Interventions

1. Establishing a 52,000-Capacity Tree Nursery

Indigenous seedlings including bamboo, croton, podo, and African olive.

2. Riparian & Hillside Restoration

Planting bamboo and stabilizing soils in erosion-prone zones.

3. Community Capacity Building

Training women, youth, and farmers on sustainable forestry and conservation.

4. Monitoring & Evaluation System

Using GIS mapping, geotagging, and survival tracking.
